Yervand Kochar

Jerwand Kochar (Armenian Երվանդ Քոչար; born June 15, 1899 in Tbilisi, † January 22, 1979 in Yerevan ) was an Armenian painter and sculptor.

Jerwand Kochar graduated from the Nersisian school in Tbilisi and studied painting in Moscow. He emigrated to Paris in 1922, where he lived until 1936 and worked. There he had exhibitions along with Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Giorgio De Chirico. Jerwand Kochar belonged to the Parisian school. He absorbed many influences of his time as Cubism and Futurism. After emigrating to Armenia in 1936, he became known as a sculptor. After 1945 he exhibited in Paris. Kochar died 1979. A named after him museum was opened in Yerevan in 1984.
