Yggdrasil Linux/GNU/X

Yggdrasil Linux was one of the first Linux distributions. It was developed by Adam J. Richter company Yggdrasil and is regarded as the first commercial Linux distribution for a wide range of users.

Distribution

Yggdrasil Linux was delivered on CD -ROM from November 1992. You could even be started as a live CD. In former print editions of HOWTOs Yggdrasil Linux was often referred to as " plug- and-play Linux" listed because it had a taken for granted today hardware detection.

The 1995 set distribution is still available. Interestingly, they might be for people who need support for old hardware or generally are interested in the historical development of Linux.

A person or company

In addition to the Linux distribution the company Yggdrasil moved some of the first books on the subject of Linux compilation and was instrumental in the development of the file system and the X Window System.

Adam J. Richter played a key role in all these developments and supported a group of small Linux companies and enthusiasts. Currently offers judges Software Consulting and still works on the Linux kernel. He also frequently visits Linux events in northern California.

Word origin

The name Yggdrasil is the World Ash in Germanic mythology.
