Yisrael Galili

Yisrael Galili (Hebrew ישראל גלילי; born February 10, 1911 in Brailow; † February 8, 1986 in Na'an ) was an Israeli politician.

Life

Galili was born in 1911 when Israel Berchenko in Ukrainian Brailow. His family emigrated in 1914 to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. After schooling and apprenticeship he began in 1927 a military career with the Haganah. In 1935, he was appointed to the leadership of the Haganah. During the Second World War he was involved in preparations to prevent a German invasion of Palestine. In 1946 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Haganah and was until 1948 in this capacity, including for the Mossad le Aliyah Bet.

Galili was one of the founders of the Histadrut ha - ha - No'ar Owed we- ha - Lomed ( Federation of the working and student youth ) and the kibbutz Na'an, where he lived until his death. In the first Knesset, and then from the third to the eighth Knesset, he worked as a deputy. He was first a member of the Mapam party, later Ahdut Haavoda and the Avodah, the Israeli Labor Party, in the meantime also the HaMa'arach. He briefly served as Minister of Information and then as Minister without Portfolio.
