Ylikiiminki

Ylikiiminki [ Yliki Minki ː ] (Swedish historically Överkiminge ) is a former municipality with around 3,400 inhabitants in the north of Finland. It is located about 35 km northeast of the city of Oulu at the middle reaches of the river Kiiminkijoki. In the municipality is spoken exclusively Finnish.

On 1 January 2009 it was incorporated into the city of Oulu, whose area is doing more than tripled.

By far the largest part of its territory is covered by forests; some lakes, streams and rivers contribute to the charm of the landscape.

The place Ylikiiminki originated in the 16th century by the settlement of Finnish settlers from the eastern Finnish countryside Savo. In the nearby village Vesala that today also belongs to the community, settled by about 1560 until now sung in many narratives Finnish Landsknecht Pekka Vesainen to that from here undertook military expeditions to Karelia during the 1570-1595 smoldering conflict between Sweden and Russia.
