Yngve Zotterman

Yngve Zotterman ( born September 20, 1898 in Vadstena, † March 13, 1982 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish neurophysiologist.

After his medical education at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm he had with Edgar Adrian in whose laboratory pioneering studies of signal coding in myelinated nerve fibers. In his own laboratory Zottermann could signal transmission in non- myelinated nerve fibers prove ( Erlanger / Gasser Class C) and elucidate the sensory properties of the skin, especially the pain and heat perception first.

He led the physiological study of energy consumption and metabolism of Swedish Hölzfällern, the first study of heavy workers at all. Later he devoted himself to the neurochemical properties of the sense of taste.

1971 Zottermann was elected to the German Leopoldina.
