Yobe State

Yobe is a state of Nigeria, with its capital Damaturu, which is with 255 913 inhabitants (2005) and largest city.

Geography

The state is located in the northeast of the country, bordered to the north by the Republic of Niger, the south by the state of Gombe, on the northwest by the state of Jigawa, on the southwest by the Bauchi State and on the east by the state of Borno. The Yobe State is like the Borno State in the Nigerian part of the Chad basin.

The main rivers are the Hadeija and Jama'are, both irrigate the Hadejia - Nguru wetlands and near the village of Gashua unite the two, this river of Komadugu Yobe is then called. A north -flowing branch of Hadeija, Marma channel flows in the 37 -acre Nguru Lake. The bath - Nguru Wetlands and the Bulatura area are National Nature Reserves and the National Park Chad Basin.

History

The state was formed on August 27, 1991 from a part of the state of Borno.

First administrator was between August 28th 1991 and January 1992 Sanni Daura Ahmed. Current governor since May 29, 1999 Bukar Ibrahim.

Population

The largest ethnic group that lives in Yobe State are Fulani .. Besides live in Yobe among others, the Kanuri, Kare Kare, Bolewa, Ngizim, Bade, Hausa, and Shuwa Ngamo.

Islam is by far the largest religion in the province. Jobe has Islamic law, the Sharia introduced the new millennium.

The state is divided into 17 Local Government Areas. These are: Bard, Bosari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Geidam, Gujba, Gulani, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Machina, Nangere, Nguru, Potiskum, Tarmua, Yunusari and Yusufari.

Economy

Agriculture and fishing are the main economic activities in Yobe. The cattle markets of the state are among the largest in West Africa. The climatic and ecological conditions allow the cultivation of rubber, peanuts, beans, cotton and others. At minerals gypsum, kaolin and quartz are present.
