Yoelbi Quesada

Yoelbi Luis Quesada Fernández (written in some sources Yoelvis; * August 4, 1973 in Trinidad ) is a former Cuban triple jumper.

The Vice Junior World Champion from 1990 in 1991 at the World Championships and won seventh place in the Pan American Games in Havana. He became Junior World Champion in 1992 and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona in sixth with 17.18 meters.

In 1993 he occupied at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto, he finished fifth at the World Championships in Stuttgart twelfth place.

In 1995 he won at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona with 17.62 meter silver behind Brian Wellman of Bermuda and defended his title at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata. At the World Championships in Gothenburg Quesada covered with wind -assisted 17.59 meters square and 4 bronze missed only because of the poorer second attempt.

His only Olympic medal won Yoelbi Quesada at the Games in Atlanta in 1996 with 17.44 meters behind Kenny Harrison with 18.09 meters and 17.88 meters with Jonathan Edwards. He had four inches ahead of Mike Conley.

His biggest success was Quesada win in 1997, when he won with a personal best of 17.85 meters at the second attempt before Jonathan Edwards at the World Championships in Athens. Shortly after, he also won gold at the Universiade.

At the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi in 1999 he finished fourth. At the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, he defended his title for the second time, won again at the Universiade, but was only tenth at the World Championships in Seville.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Quesada was back again in the world rankings. With his last attempt of 17.37 meters to Quesada sat on rank 3, but was still repressed by his countryman Yoel García for a place, when García ersprang in his last attempt with 17.47 meters silver.

At the World Indoor Championships 2003 in Birmingham and at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo Quesada won bronze. At the World Championships in Paris / Saint- Denis Quesada was ninth with 16.84 and missed the final battle only two centimeters.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Quesada was 16.96 meters again aft.

With this competition, he ended his active career. He holds a degree in sports science and joined the coaching staff in Havana the long jump disciplines under head coach Milán Matos on. Later he married a Spaniard, with whom he moved to Barcelona and founded a family. When his wife was offered a job in Ingolstadt, the family moved in mid-2012 in the meantime to Germany. Quesada was hoping to be able to work later as a coach here. After the withdrawal of unverhergesehenen Matos from the Cuban sport Quesada took over the role of head coach of the three jumpers, including Mabel Gay, which is the best jumper of the team after the withdrawal of Yargelis Savigne in July 2013 in May 2013.

At a height of 1.81 m his competition weight was 71 kg. In the Cuban media, he was nicknamed " El Chispa " (The Spark).
