Yohanan Aharoni

Yohanan Aharoni ( born June 7, 1919 in Frankfurt an der Oder, † February 9, 1976 in Tel Aviv; actually Yohanan Aronheim ) was a German -Israeli archaeologist.

Career

Yohanan Aharoni in 1933 emigrated from Nazi Germany to Palestine and became a founding member of Kibbutz Alonim, where he lived until 1947. 1948 to 1950 he served in the Israeli armed forces. In the newly established State of Israel, he began his archaeological career at the Department of Antiquities Inspector for Galilee as antiquities. In 1968 he went to the University of Tel Aviv in the rank of professor and was also Chairman of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern cultures. In 1957, he discovered and studied the ruins of a fort on the plateau east of En - Qudes. In 1962, he discovered in the Tel Arad, the House of Yahweh. 1965 to 1971 he undertook with one of his students, Volkmar Fritz, excavations at Tel Arad, Lachish, and Tell es - Seba.
