The State University of Yokohama (Japanese横 浜 国立 大学, Yokohama kokuritsu daigaku, in short: Yokokoku or YNU ) is a national university in Japan. The campus is located in Tokiwadai, Hodogaya -ku, Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture.

History

The university was founded in 1949 by the merger of four state-owned schools. The four were:

  • The business school Yokohama (横 浜 経 済 専 门 学校, Yokohama keizai Semmon Gakko, founded in 1923 ),
  • The pilot Yokohama (横 浜 工业 専 门 学校, Yokohama Kōgyō Semmon Gakko, founded in 1920 ),
  • The normal school Kanagawa (神奈川 师范学校, Kanagawa shihan Gakko, founded in 1876 ), and
  • Youth Normal School Kanagawa (神奈川 青年 师范学校, Kanagawa his shihan Gakko, founded in 1920 ).

First liked the new state university " University of Yokohama" hot, but the name also wanted two ( municipal and private ) universities. So used any other name: the State University of Yokohama, the Yokohama Municipal University and the University of Kanagawa.

In 1949 she had five locations (4 in Yokohama and one in Kamakura ), which they inherited from the former schools. 1974 today Tokiwadai Campus was opened; he was more of a golf course. In 1979, the sites were pooled for Tokiwadai Campus.
