Yonkoma

Yonkoma (Japanese四 コマ 漫画, yonkoma manga, dt "Four -frame comic" ) or 4- koma is a Japanese comic strip format, in four panels ( initiation, development, surprising twist and conclusion cf. shō Ki -ten- ketsu ) is a self-contained, often witty story.

Yonkoma manga appear in manga magazines, newspapers and in magazines. They rarely be summarized in the form of anthologies.

Historical Development

Due to the influence of American comics originated in the late 19th century first Yonkoma manga. The artist Rakuten Kitazawa created in 1902 the first Yonkoma comic strip with constant figures.

From 1946 Machiko Hasegawa was known for her Yonkoma series sazae -san, which ended only in 1972. Since 1969 it is implemented as a popular, even today produced anime series with weekly broadcast.

By the late 1940s, among other things, by Osamu Tezuka Manga popularized story with continuous action were Yonkoma manga somewhat pushed into the background. Nevertheless, artists such as Masamichi Yokoyama ( Yaruki Manman ) Hisaichi Ishii ( Tonari no Yamada -kun ), Sensha Yoshida ( Utsurun desu ), Masashi Ueda ( Kobo - chan) Kiyohiko Azuma and ( Azumanga Daioh ) continue successfully.
