Yorkton

Yorkton (City of Yorkton ) is a city in southeastern Saskatchewan, near the Manitoba border.

The population was approximately 15,669 inhabitants in 2011. The population of the metropolitan area was 18,282 inhabitants.

History

First pioneers from York County in Ontario settled down in 1882. They had been recruited by the York Farmers Colonization Company and founded an initial three kilometers north of the present town on the banks of a small river, the settlement York Colony. The area was then still to Assiniboia and was part of the Northwest Territories, which were co-managed by Upper Fort Garry, now Winnipeg, from.

During the Second World War was north of the city, an airport for the no. 11 Service Flying Training School at RCAF built, today the Yorkton Municipal Airport.

Location

Yorkton is located approximately 170 kilometers northeast of Regina and 300 km southeast of Saskatoon and hence is located between these cities and Winnipeg.
