Yorktown is a small town in York County, Virginia, in the United States of America. The city is home to 203 inhabitants (as of 2000).

History

Was named the city that was founded in 1691, after the city of York in Northern England. Yorktown was made ​​famous by the 1781 Battle of Yorktown, which brought an end to the American Revolutionary War. The city was the stronghold of the British general Charles Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown.

At the same place a major battle took place also during the Civil War (1861-1865 ). Between April and May 1862 the city was besieged by Union soldiers.

Today, Yorktown is home to two military installations of the armed forces of the United States:

  • Naval Station Yorktown the United States Navy
  • Coast Guard Station Yorktown, a training school of the U.S. Coast Guard

Together with Jamestown and Williamsburg Yorktown forms the Historic Triangle. In Yorktown is a Colonial National Historical Park by the Yorktown National Battlefield and the Yorktown National Cemetery are located. A designed by Richard Morris Hunt Monument commemorates the victory of, 1781.
