The yo - Sudarso Bay (formerly known as Humboldt Bay, also Humboldtbai, Humboldt Bay or Humboldt Bay ) is a bay on the northern Pacific coast of the island of New Guinea in the district of Jayapura of Indonesia's Papua province, near the border with Papua New Guinea. On it lies the city of Jayapura, which was from 1910 to 1962 Hollandia.

History

The bay was discovered in 1827 by the Frenchman Jules Dumont d' Urville. The area around it became part of Dutch New Guinea, near the border with the German colony of Kaiser-Wilhelms -Land, now known as Papua New Guinea. This became known as Humboldt Bay, after the explorer Alexander von Humboldt.

During the Pacific War, the Humboldt Bay played an important role. In April 1942, she was captured by the Japanese, recaptured by the Americans in the course of the operation Reckless from the April 22, 1944 and again the site of a major U.S. naval base. Until the liberation of the Philippines in October 1944, she served as the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur.

When West New Guinea in the early 1960 sought its independence, Indonesia annexed the territory. The bay is now named after the Indonesian Navy commander and folk hero Yos Sudarso ( 1925-1962 ).
