Yos Sudarso Island

The yo - Sudarso Island ( Pulau Yos Sudarso ) or Kimaan is an approximately 180 km long and 100 km wide Indonesian island off the southwest coast of New Guinea.

Geography

The island belongs to the administrative district of Merauke, Papua province. From New Guinea as well as from the south, the smaller island Komoran - Yos Sudarso Island ( Selat Buaya, Fr. Muli ) is only through the narrow Buaya Road disconnected, the 1.7 km wide in the south to 10 km in itself north widespread. The flat island is mostly covered by tropical vegetation and crossed by numerous watercourses. Are some of the largest mangrove forests in the world on the coast.

Capital of the island is Kimaam ( Kimaan ) on the east coast (at the Buaya Road ). This name is also referred to as alternative name, the entire island.

Name

The island is now named after an officer of the Indonesian Navy. During the Dutch colonial period, the island Frederik -Hendrik Island was called, in Germany it was, however, Friedrich -Heinrich- called island. Other names are Dolak and Kolepom.
