Young Corbett III

Young Corbett III ( born Raffaele Capabianca Giordano, born May 27, 1905 in Rionero in Vulture, Potenza province, Italy, † July 15, 1993 in Auberry, Fresno County, USA ) was an American boxer of Italian descent. He was professional world champion in the welterweight and middleweight in 1933 and 1938 is considered by many to be one of the best boxers of all time.

Career

Corbett came even as an infant with his parents as an immigrant in the United States. They lived first in Pittsburgh and moved to Fresno, California later. In 1919 he began as " Ralph Giordano " with the boxes ( he later changed his name to "Young Corbett III ").

The rugged southpaw Corbett played many legendary fights. For example, he played a series of four battles against the eventual welterweight world champion Jack Thompson, one of which he won three and drawn one ended. He also recorded victories against Sergeant Sammy Baker, Mickey Walker, Billy Conn, Fred Apostoli, the welterweight world champion Jackie Fields and the later middleweight champion Ceferino Garcia.

On February 22, 1933 Corbett won the welterweight world title in a 10 round fight against Jackie Fields. He won 6 rounds, Fields only 3 out of 10 rounds. Three months later he was dethroned by Jimmy McLarnin by a knockout in the first round.

Then Corbett rose to the middleweight division. He suggested in this time later heavyweight champion Gus Lesnevich ( TKO 5 ) and Mickey Walker and Billy Conn. On February 22, 1938, he beat Fred Apostoli and won the world title in this weight class. On 18 November of the same year he met again Apostoli, but this time was stopped in the eighth round. As Corbett in 1940 ended his career, he had played 156 fights, of which he won 122 (32 KO ) and 12 lost.

Others

In addition to his boxing career Corbett worked as a sports teacher the California Highway Patrol and as a gravedigger. In Fresno was a statue Corbetts, built with him in Boxerpose. He was also inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.
