Young Estonia

Noor - Eesti ( Young Estonia) was a neo-romantic literary movement that joined forces in 1903 in Estonia. Thinkers was the poet Gustav Suits.

Origin, members and program

1903, collected a coterie of politically interested students. Two years later, the first anthology of them under the title of Noor - Eesti. He became the programmatic collection point and later named after a loose group of the most important young poets of the time.

The group included, among others, Gustav Suits, peace Tuglas always, Bernhard Linde, Johannes Aavik, Villem Grünthal - Ridala, Aino Kallas, Jaan Oks and August at all as the most important representatives. They also exerted influence on the works of Anton Hansen Tammsaares. Radius Noor - Eesti were the visual artist Nikolai Triik, Kristjan Raud and Konrad Mägi who contributed with book illustrations to the works of Noor - Eesti.

The three mottos of the group has Gustav Suits 1905 formulated the first album of the group: " Jeunesse oblige", " multi- cultural " ( Enam kultuuri ) and "Let's be Estonians, but we are also Europeans! " ( Olgem Eestlased, aga saagem ka eurooplasteks ). Noor - Eesti understood itself as a counterpart to the "old " Baltic German elite. The Estonians should finally say goodbye to the rural life and find intellectual connection to Europe. Noor - Eesti was under the influence of similar movements in other European countries, such as the Young Latvians and Nuori Suomi ( " Finland Young ").

The aesthetic concept followed the contemporary currents of the time and took on impressionist, symbolist and expressionist influences. Many impetus came from Finland, where many parties were studying. Noor - Eesti also opened strong the currents of German, Russian, Scandinavian, French and Italian literature. In addition to the cultural, literary meaning had Noor Eesti large share of the growing strength of an Estonian national consciousness.

Noor - Eesti published 1905-1916 five albums ( albumid ). In addition, Noor - Eesti was in 1910/11 the literature, art and science magazine Noor Eesti: kirjanduse, Kunsti yes teaduste ajakiri out ( six numbers). 1912 Noor - Eesti was officially registered as a club with 61 founding members in Tartu.

Noor - Eesti practiced 1905-1919 of great influence on the Estonian literature and the expansion of the Estonian language. A further development is the group Siuru who turned to the intellectualism of Noor - Eesti off and become more human emotions.
