Youth Leadership

Youth leadership is an educational program which exists in almost all English speaking countries. It encourages learning through action and is part of the Civic Education.

The idea is to young people in such a way that they are capable of projects - for example in their community - to initiate and lead, and when they are no longer able to continue guiding the project to train other young people to the extent that these then be able to continue in their place the project. Projects that have arisen, for example, service learning in school, can then be continued by these trained youths.

" The declared aims of the leadership programs are:

  • The systematic promotion and development of the social potential for democratic governance;
  • The development of a selbstreflektiven and self-critical leadership awareness among young people;
  • Promoting self-confident and selbstverantwortetem action;
  • The mediation of the actions necessary to carry Leadership of basic skills;
  • The transfer of responsibility to the people and the feedback on their performance. ( Sliwka, p 51)

In Germany you will find in the Boy Scouts, with group leaders of the Young Firefighters in Christian groups with similar political parties in the formation of the leadership ability of groups, but less in the non-governmental organizations, municipalities or districts and not really in schools.

For example, the KIDS project of Speakers Corner Munich is methodologically based on Toastmasters International Youth Leadership Program.
