Yowah

Yowah is a small town in the outback in western Queensland, Australia. The town is located 132 km from Cunnamulla and 813 kilometers from Brisbane. According to a census in 2006 Yowah had a population of 142 people. The number varies because there temporarily stop Opalsucher.

Location and Opals

The place is known for its Opalfunde and was built in the Yowah Opal Mining Fields, which were later renamed Yowah groove Fields. 1883 the first opals were mined, the hot Yowah nuts. It is nut- shaped iron concretions, which contain in their core opals.

About 25 kilometers south of Yowah is a small opal field Black Gate and the Leopard Wood Mine. In this area, opals are found, the Yowah nuts, Schwarzopale, so-called crystal opals and fossils. Opalsucher need a license to Opalsuche and may only work with manual tools.

The place is a rural transit center with a library, tourist information, a cafe and internet cafe. Only in recent years the town has electricity, water, telephone and television via satellite.

About this area there is a hiking guide and takes place in July each year the Yowah Opal Festival.

Yowah has the smallest elementary school in Queensland.
