Yttrium is a chemical compound of yttrium selected from the group of the fluorides.
Production and representation
Yttrium fluoride may be represented by the reaction of fluorine with yttria or yttrium hydroxide and hydrofluoric acid.
Properties
Yttrium fluoride having a refractive index of 1.51 at 500 nm and is in the range of 193 nm to 14,000 nm (that is, from the UV to the IR range ) transparent.
By reduction with calcium may be recovered from yttrium pure yttrium.
Use
There is used as starting material for the preparation of pure yttrium or other yttrium compounds, and as a material for thin films, glasses and ceramic materials.
Other Yttriumfluoride
Yttrium (I ) fluoride, YF (CAS 13981-88-9 ) and yttrium (II ) fluoride, YF2 (CAS 13981-89-0 ) are extremely unstable and only known in the gas phase.
