Under the Song Dynasty (960 AD - 1279 AD), Yueyang was heavily fortified. It has built a wall with a diameter of about 6.5 km around the city and it became the seat of the military district administration of Yueyang ( and bares that name). The capture of the city during the Taiping Rebellion in 1852 AD was a major success of the rebels on their way along the Yangtze River valley to Nanjing. At the time of founding of the People 's Republic of China in 1949 was Yueyang prefecture-level city.
