Yugorsky Strait

Geographical location

The Jugorstraße (Russian Югорский Шар, Jugorski band ) is a strait in the extreme northeast of Europe. It connects the Kara Sea and the Barents Sea in northern Russia. It separates the island from the Russian mainland Waigatsch and in places is just two kilometers wide, extends to the northeast but to almost 10 km.

The name derives from the ancient name " Yugra " ( Югра ) or " Jugorien " ( Югория, Jugorija ), which from the 11th to 17th century, the region between the Pechora and the North Urals and the settlements of the Khanty and Mansi in West Siberia designated.
