Yulin (Shaanxi)
Yulin (Chinese榆林, Pinyin Yulin ) is a prefecture-level city of Shaanxi province in the People's Republic of China. Yulin is located in the far north of the province, bordering there to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The administrative area of the city has a total area of 43,578 km ² ( of which 42 % desert ) and approximately 3.38 million inhabitants ( end of 2004).
Administrative Divisions
At county level, Yulin is composed of a municipality and eleven circles. These are:
- City Yuyang District (榆阳区), 7053 km ², 460,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
- Circle Shenmu (神木县), 7635 km ², 370,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Shenmu (神木 镇);
- Fugu county (府谷 县), 3212 km ², population 210,000, capital: greater community Fugu ( Fugu ) (府谷 镇);
- Hengshan county (横山县), 4084 km ², 330,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Hengshan (横山 镇);
- Circle Jingbian (靖边 县), 5088 km ², 290,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Zhangjiapan (张家 畔 镇);
- Circle Ding Bian (定边县), 6920 km ², 310,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Ding Bian (定 边 镇);
- Circle Suide (绥德 县), 1878 km ², 350,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Mingzhou (名 州镇);
- Circle Mizhi (米脂 县), 1212 km ², population 210,000, capital: large village Yinzhou (银 州镇);
- Circle Jia (佳县), 2144 km ², 250,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Jialu (佳 芦 镇);
- Circle Wubu (吴堡 县), 428 km ², 80,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Songjiachuan (宋家川 镇);
- Circle Qingjian (清涧 县), 1881 km ², population 210,000, capital: greater community Kuanzhou (宽 洲镇);
- Circle Zizhou (子洲县), 2043 km ², 310,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Shuanghuyu (双 湖 峪 镇).
History
2004, a protest of the farmers were violently suppressed.
Yulin hosted the 11th Conference CHIME (European Foundation for Chinese Music Research) in August 2006.
Culture
Due to the relative isolation remained a considerable amount of classical architecture in the city received. Cultural relics such as the " Zhenbeitai Watchtower ", built during the Ming Dynasty, and the " Red-Stone Gorge ", a gorge with caves with Buddhist art. In addition, parts of the old Great Wall, built during the Qin dynasty, can be found scattered around the city.
