Yuri Alexandrov (boxer)

Yuri Vasilyevich Alexandrov (Russian Юрий Васильевич Александров; born October 13, 1963 in Kamensk- Uralski; † January 1, 2013 in Moscow) was a Russian- Soviet boxer.

Career

Alexandrov was a five-time Soviet champion, 1982 at flyweight (-51 kg) and 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987 in the Bantamweight (-54 kg).

At the World Championships 1982 in Munich Alexandrov won after victories among others Ljubisa Simic over, Yugoslavia (5-0 ), the gold medal. The following year he won after a final victory over Sami Buzoli, Yugoslavia (5-0 ), the European title. Due to the Olympic boycott of the Soviet Union in 1984 Aleksandrov was unable to attend the Olympics. The alternatively held competitions of the friendship he won the silver medal. In the final, he lost against Cuban Ramon Ledon 3-2 judges' votes.

At the World Championships in 1986 in Reno Alexandrov reached after victories over Simic (4:1) and Akeem Anifowoshe, Nigeria (5-0 ), the semi-final, which he, however, against Rene Breitbarth, East Germany (5-0 ) lost. 1987 Alexandrov won the silver medal at the European Championships in Turin. In the final he defeated the Bulgarians Alexandar Hristov (5-0 ).

Alexandrov in 1989 became the first Soviet boxer professional. He denied only five fights and was very successful. In 1992 he beendetet his career.

After the pit

2001 Alexandrov was vice president of the Russian Profiboxverbandes. He held this post until his death on 1 January 2013. Alexandrov was buried in the cemetery Trojekurowo.
