Yuri Averbakh

Yuri Averbakh Lvovitch (Russian Юрий Львович Авербах, scientific transliteration: Jurij L' vovič Averbach, born February 8, 1922 in Kaluga ) is a Russian chess master and functionary. Since the death of Andor Lilienthal, he is the oldest living chess grandmaster.

Yuri Averbakh learned chess as a 7- year-old. In 1938, he won the championship of the USSR students. In 1944 he received the title of champion of the USSR. Three times (1949, 1950, 1962) he won the championship of Moscow. In 1952 he was awarded the title of FIDE Grand Master.
