Yuri II of Vladimir

Yuri II Vsyevolodovitch (* 1189, † March 1238 ) was the Grand Prince of Vladimir from 1218 from the dynasty of Rurik. He was the son of Vsevolod Jurjewitschs.

Shortly before his death called Vsevolod Jurjewitsch 1211 an assembly of nobles, clergy and townspeople a, from which he wanted to be a rubber stamp perforation of Senioratsprinzips: His son Yuri should be his successor. However, this was not successful. After Wsewolods death initially tore the elder brother Constantine the power. Yuri was forced to flee. Only after Constantine's death in 1218 he was able to take the rule.

In 1221 he founded Nizhny Novgorod. Juris reign was characterized primarily by efforts to safeguard the position of power, who had fought for his father for the Principality of Vladimir. Yuri was able to secure the domination of Novgorod, lead successful campaigns against the Volga Bulgars and enforce its sovereignty in several Russian princes. Beginning in March 1238, he fell while trying to stop the whole of Russia by Tartars pressing forward on the river Sit. Even Vladimir fell under the domination of the Tartars. Thus, the brief flowering of the Grand Duchy was initially completed. The Russian Northeast fell apart after Juris death again, except for the short restoration of central government under Alexander Nevsky. His younger brother Jaroslaw II succeeds Juris II.
