Yuri Karlovich Arnold

Yuri Karlovich Arnold (Russian Юрий Карлович Арнольд; * 1 Novemberjul / November 13 1811greg in Saint Petersburg, .. .. † 8 Julijul / July 20 1898greg in Karakasch ) was a Russian composer, musicologist, music critic, choir director and music teacher.

Arnold came after studying in Tartu in the army. After his retirement in 1838 he lived as a composer. From 1863 to 1870 he was a music journalist in Leipzig and wrote for the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik. In 1870, he founded a private music school in Moscow, which he headed until 1894. Occasionally, he lectured at the University of Moscow on music history and acoustics.

Arnold has composed an opera, two operettas and two overtures. He has researched and published on Russian church music. His memoirs, published in 1892. Juri Arnold wore through his publicist and his translations of operas and songs much to the spread of Russian music abroad.
