Yuri Stepanov (athlete)

Yuri Stepanov ( born August 30, 1932 in Leningrad, now St Petersburg, † 1965) was a Soviet athlete. He reached when compared to other cities Helsinki - Leningrad on July 13, 1957 in the high jump at the first attempt and was 2.16 m world record holder ( previous personal best was 2.09 meters ). He scored his world record with the so-called catapult shoe, the sole of this was running a wedge shape to the back so that a more favorable take-off angle was ( this shoe was soon banned ). This record lasted until 1960.

1954 and 1958 he was a master of the USSR and won the Universiade 1957 in Paris with 2.12m.

According to mental health problems, he played from 1959 barely competitions and committed suicide in 1965 at age 33.
