Yuri Tyukalov

Yuri Sergeyevich Tjukalow (Russian Юрий Сергеевич Тюкалов; born July 4, 1930 in Leningrad ) is a former rower from the Soviet Union. He won two Olympic gold medals.

1948 Tjukalow was first became Soviet champion in double sculls together with Kirsanof, from 1951 to 1953 he was a Soviet champion in One. At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, he was his opponents completely unknown. He defeated in the final of the Australian defending champion Mervyn Wood and Poland Teodor Kocerka. Tjukalow was the first Soviet Olympic champion in rowing.

In the Soviet Cup in 1955 Tjukalow won one before Alexander Berkutow and the young Vyacheslav Ivanov. After Ivanov 1956 Soviet champion, Tjukalow and Berkutow dodged in the double sculls. They were European champions in 1956 and won at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956.

Tjukalow and Berkutow were 1957-1959 European Champion, which they won in 1959 before the Czechoslovak boat with Václav Kozák and Pavel Schmidt. At the Olympic Games in 1960, the Russians were subject to Kozák and Schmidt. 1961 at the European Championships then regained Tjukalow and Berkutow, the Czechoslovaks were third.

Tjukalow, who had studied during his career at the Leningrad Academy of Arts, was rowing coach after his career. In 1976 they asked him if he wanted to make as a sculptor the " Victory Square " in Leningrad. Tjukalow ended his coaching career and was a sculptor. He worked for two years at the Victory Square. Later he created metal reliefs, so at the monument in Borodino and at the Cathedral of Saint Petersburg.
