Yuriorkis Gamboa (2011)

Yuriorkis Gamboa Toledano ( born December 23, 1981 in Guantánamo, Cuba ) is a Cuban professional boxer, former IBF and WBA Featherweight Champion.

Amateur

2003 Yuriorkis Gamboa won the Pan American Games, at the Amateur World Championships in Bangkok ( Thailand ), he lost to local hero and eventual winner Somjit Jongjohor just in the quarterfinals.

In 2004, Gamboa was at the Olympic Games in Athens Olympic champion at flyweight. He edged the Moldovans Igori Samoilenco, took the Thai world champion Jongjohor revenge, defeating the Russians Georgi Balakschin, starting off for Germany Rustam Rakhimov and the final runner- Jérôme Thomas of France. In the same year he also won the Chemistry Cup in Halle. By his own admission his economic situation was so tense that he even sold his gold medal to host a birthday party for his two year old daughter.

In the amateur world championships in 2005 in Mianyang he reached a third place at featherweight. He was defeated there in the semi-final against being beaten for Bulgaria Alexei Schaidulin because it was taken by points lying at the time of the battle Abbruches in the lead, because of a laceration of the fight.

Professional career

At the turn of 2006/2007 to Yuriorkis Gamboa sat with his colleagues Odlanier Solis and Yan BARTHELEMI off at a training camp in Venezuela by the Cuban team and signed with the Hamburg boxing stable Arena Box-Promotion a professional contract. In April 2007 he was in Hamburg his successful pro debut and had a good boxing techniques and quick reflexes. His first professional fights, he played in Germany before moving to Florida, a stronghold of Cuban exiles moved and since then mainly boxed in the USA.

In his 15 professional fight and less than two years after his pro debut Gamboa won the interim WBA World Championship at featherweight. He defeated the 37 -year-old Venezuelan José Rojas by technical knockout in the tenth round.

On 10 October 2009 he defeated Garcia Whyber technical knockout in the 4th round, and thus became the official WBA champion. On 11 September 2010 he won by unanimous points victory against Orlando Salido, in addition to the IBF world title. Then his WBA title was upgraded to super world title.

On March 26, 2011 of his IBF world title was again withdrawn because he had not appeared in his title defense against Jorge Solís for the second weighing and had charged him to exceed the weight limit. On June 11, 2011 it also the WBA SuperWM belt was withdrawn, as it no longer met the requirements of the WBA Union for the possession of the Super Cup title by losing the IBF title.

After a break of nearly six months, he won on September 10, 2011 in Atlantic City against former world champion Daniel Ponce de Leon ( 41-3 ).
