Yury Melikhov

Yuri Melichow, English transcription Yuri Melikhov, (Russian Юрий Афанасьевич Мелихов; born April 1, 1937 in Leningrad, Soviet Union, † 2000) was a Soviet cyclist.

Sports career

Yuri Afanasievich Melichow was State Amateur Cycling Union of Soviet. Since no publications on Soviet cycling championships or other national cycling events in the Soviet Union are tangible, only the international career Melichows can be shown here. This is essentially limited to the International Peace Race, the Olympic Games and the UCI Road World Championships.

Melichows first registered international Appearance International Peace Race 1959 took place in the three-country stage race. The 22 -year-old freshman was the best Soviet rider won a stage and was in the final ranking seventh. With his team he won the country standings. Until 1965 Melichow participated in a total of four trips peace. The most successful was he in 1961 when he was Tour winner after a two year absence and won four stages. In this race Melichow provided with an unfair attack on the GDR driver Manfred white leather a stir when it came to blows in the sequence between the two. Without stage wins Melichow 1962 second, then made another two year break to in 1965 for the last time entered twice into the stage winner list. In the individual competition he landed but only ranked 45th

1960 belonged to Melichow team squad of the Soviet Union for the road cycling race in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. He won with the Soviet foursome in the 100 km team time trial bronze medal in the individual road race he missed this and just landed after a mass sprint in the sprint in fourth place. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 Melichow landed in individual road race relegated to rank 60th

Also on the fourth place came Melichow at the world road championship in 1960 at the Sachsenring. There, too, he was defeated again in the sprint from the closed box. At the World Championships in 1963 in the Belgian Ronse he came in the 100 -km team time trial with his team in third place again on the podium.

Against the Peace Race - scandal of 1961 Melichow had made in the same year for positive headlines when he won the round GDR road race as the first foreign driver to the lignite.
