Yury Zaitsev

Yuri Konstantinovich Zaytsev (Russian Юрий Константинович Зайцев, scientific transliteration Yuri Konstantinović Zajcev; born January 17, 1951 in Pobedino, Sakhalin Oblast ) is a former Soviet weightlifter. He was Olympic champion in 1976 and world champion in 1978 in the category up to 110 kg.

Career

Zaitsev grew up in the Sakhalin Oblast in Pobedino. When he was 10 years old, his parents moved with him to the former SSR Kazakhstan and were based in Karaganda. In Karaganda, he attended high school and was there for the first time intensively in contact sports. At the age of 14, he began with the weight lifting. His first trainer was Vladimir Netschipurenko, who looked after him for many years. He won in the next few years as Junior Championships some of the regions Karaganda and Omsk.
