Yuryevets, Ivanovo Oblast

Jurjewez (Russian Юрьевец ) is a city in the Ivanovo (Russia) with 10,210 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 170 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Ivanovo on the right bank of the dam here to Gorkier pent Volga.

Jurjewez is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The city was (also Georgi ) founded by Vladimir and Suzdal prince Yuri Vsyevolodovitch 1225 and ( now Tartu to distinguish Yuriev -Polsky and Yuriev Liwonski, Yuriev on the Volga ) named after him Yuriev Povolzhsky. Even the name Georgiyevsk was used.

Already in 1237 the city was captured by the troops of Batu Khan and destroyed, but recovered again.
