Yushima Tenman-gū

The Yushima Tenman- gū (Japanese汤 岛 天 満 宫), also Yushima Tenjin (汤 岛 天神) or Yushima Shrine (汤 岛 神社, Yushima -jinja ) is a Shinto shrine in the Japanese capital Tokyo, which is located in the district Bunkyō. It is dedicated to Ame -no- tajikarao -no- mikoto and Sugawara no Michizane.

History

According to legend, the shrine was founded in the year 458 in honor of the deity Ame -no- tajikarao -no- mikoto. In 1355 it was due to bad dreams that had the residents of Yushima, for the worship of Sugawara no Michizane in a place under an old pine tree.

1478 was the now dilapidated system of the commander and founder of Edo, Ōta Dōkan ( 1432-1486 ), renewed after he had visited the Kitano Tenman- gū in Kyoto. The establishment of the Omote - Torii of copper is estimated by incisions寛 文 七or寛 文 九on the pillars to the time 1667/69. The total height of the Torii, including the cross bar is 6.81 m. In the pillars are carved the names of many donors, the lower ends with Chinese lions - decorated唐 狮子. On the shrine grounds is an old cast metal Torii, further has the shrine valuable castings.
