Yves Rossy

Yves Rossy ( born August 27, 1959 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland ), also known as Jet Man or FusionMan, is a Swiss pilot and inventor.

Rossy initially studied engineering and then was a professional pilot in the Swiss Air Force. Today he works as Airbus pilot for Swiss and active in his spare time as an inventor.

Flying slider

Yves Rossy was known by the development of a flying slider of rigid wings with jet engines, which enables parachutists an extended stay with a larger radius in the air. In collaboration with a research and development company Rossy succeeded after several stages of development ( including with inflatable sliding vanes ) the design of the aircraft Jet Wing. The flight glider is strapped to the back and consists of a hinged rigid blades made of carbon fiber and fiberglass, with around three meter wingspan and four small jet engines that would otherwise be used in modeling and drones. With this device he succeeded in about ten minutes to fly in controlled level flight at speeds between 120 to 300 km / h without further assistance. The start is from an airplane, the control with the body. For landing a parachute is required. For the flight he used because of the 700 ° C hot engines a fireproof suit.

The aircraft is comparable to existing developments such as the Gryphon ( "Griffin "). An early version of the flying slider came in 2003 with the extreme sportsman Felix Baumgartner known with a flight over the English Channel. Also Rossy flew over the Straits. He jumped on 26 September 2008 at noon with his aircraft from an aircraft in 2300 m height above Calais and flew at an average speed of over 200 km / h in ten minutes across the English Channel to Dover, where he landed with a parachute. The flight had to be postponed twice previously for bad weather conditions.

The first intercontinental flight Rossy on 25 November 2009 from Morocco to Spain failed, however. After a third of the flight time he fell due to loss of orientation in the clouds in the Strait of Gibraltar into the water. Rossy remained unharmed.

Rossy development professionals interested in addition because of the videos available on the Internet and lay people. The suitability of the flying slider for military operations also expressed the interest of the U.S. military. The 35th International Exhibition of Inventions (2007) in Geneva Rossy was with the phone ( next to the CERN), a renowned guest of honor.
