Yvonne Murray

Yvonne Murray ( born October 4, 1964 in Musselburgh, near Edinburgh ) is a former Scottish long-distance runner. Highlights of her career include Olympic bronze in 1988, the European title in 1990 and the title of World Champion Hall 1993.

At a height of 1.70 m her competition weight was 50 kg. 1990 Yvonne Murray MBE was awarded the title.

Career

Early years up to the 1988 Olympic medal

1982 shortly after her eighteenth birthday Yvonne Murray competed in Brisbane at the Commonwealth Games. It was in 1500 - and 3000 -meter run in each decades.

Their first international medal she latched on at the Indoor Athletics Championships 1985 in Piraeus, as she won bronze min over 3000 meters in 9:00,94 behind the Italian Agnese Possamei in 8:55,25 min and Olga Bondarenko from the Soviet Union in 8: 58.03 min.

A year later, in Madrid Murray reached in 9:01,31 min silver behind Ines burnet from the GDR to 8:54,52 min. The end of July at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 in Edinburgh Murray won bronze over 3000 meters behind Lynn Kanuka -Williams and Debbie Bowker (both Canada ) and took over 1500 meters to fifth place. A month later at the European Athletics Championships 1986 in Stuttgart she won then in 8:37,15 min bronze behind Olga Bondarenko in 8:33,99 min and the Romanian Maricica Puica in 8:35:92 min bronze, just ahead of teammate, the min for England current South African Zola Budd in 8:38,20.

At the European Indoor Championships 1987 in Liévin they now reached after bronze in 1985 and silver 1986 gold 3000 Elly van Hulst meters in front of the Netherlands and Brigitte Kraus from the Federal Republic of Germany. In Liévin but came to no runners from Eastern Europe. At the World Indoor Championships, 14 days later in Indianapolis, Russians and Romanians were at the start. It won Tetjana Samolenko before Olga Bondarenko and Maricica Puica, Yvonne Murray was fifth. On 1 September in Rome the final over 3000 meters the World Athletics Championships 1987. Samolenko won before Puica, Murray was seventh.

In Seoul Yvonne Murray in 1988 for the first time participate in the Olympics. Tetyana Samolenko won in 8:26,53 min gold before the Romanian Paula Ivan. Yvonne Murray won bronze in the personal best time of 8:29,02 min.

European champion in 1990 and the later years

In early 1990, at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland was Murray over 3000 meters second with a second behind Canada's Angela Chalmers, but with eight seconds ahead of her compatriot Liz McColgan. About 1500 meters occupied Murray fourth place. In the summer at the European Championships in Split Murray started just over 3000 meters. After a thrilling duel down the stretch Murray won in 8:43,06 min before the Russian Yelena Romanova in 8:43,68 min.

At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo was Murray Tenth and Eighth at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. At the World Indoor Championships in Toronto in 1993, she won in 8:50,55 minutes with over 12 seconds ahead of second-placed Romanian Margareta Keszeg and at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 it ranked ninth.

In Helsinki at the European Championships in 1994, she won silver in 8:36,48 minutes behind the Irishwoman Sonia O'Sullivan and Romanian Gabriela Szabo before. At the Commonwealth Games in 1994 in Victoria Yvonne Murray started in the 10,000 meters. She won in 31:56,97 min with ten seconds over Elana Meyer of South Africa.
