NISO Metadata for Images in XML ( NISO MIX short or MIX) is an XML format for describing metadata of image files and digital image collections.

It defines an exchange format with fields for the NISO standard Data Dictionary - Technical Metadata for Digital Still Images (ANSI / NISO Z39.87 - 2006) defined elements, such as file size, image resolution and color profile.

NISO MIX as an XML schema - with the support of user - developed and maintained by the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress. Since 2008, the standard is available in version 2.0.

One important application for NISO MIX is the description of image files within METS files ( METS: Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard ).
