Zabiokovlje

The nature park Biokovo (Croatian Park prirode Biokovo ), was appointed to the Natural Park thanks to its unique geomorphology, its exceptional biological diversity and its scenic natural beauty in 1981. The park covers an area of 196 km ² and includes an approximately 30 km long part of the Biokovo Mountains of Dubci to Gornja Igrane. In the park is the botanical garden of Kotišina, it is located on the slope above the village Kotišina. The Biokovo has all the typical karst phenomena to offer - sinkholes, naturally formed hollows, caves, ice pits and caves. The deepest is the 788 meter deep Amphora, the fourth deepest cave in Croatia.

The Biokovo seems at first glance poor and barren, but is home to numerous plant and animal species. In addition to jungle-like forests of beech and fir and black pine you will find numerous plant species, including endemic species such as Edraianthus pumilio, Centaurea biokovensis, Centaurea cuspidata. The wildlife of the Biokovo is peculiar and diverse, with numerous endemic species and tertiary relics. The subterranean fauna is a true natural treasure with 60 endemic species Biokovo.

A variety of tracks refer to the lives of people in the mountains, such as the archaeological remains, the small churches, chapels and pastoral districts. To the top of Biokovo, the Sv. Jure ( St. George ) leads a 23- kilometer road, which is also the highest paved road in Croatia except the hiking paths.
