Zabuton

Zabuton (Japanese座 布 団) is a traditional Japanese seat cushion.

In contrast to the round Ensa the Zabuton is square, filled and dates from the beginning of the Edo period. It solved the Ensa from the private households. In the temples and shrines is held, however, the Ensa. The precursor of the Zabuton was the aristocratic households Shitone reserved. The Zabuton is primarily made of cotton, sometimes of linen or silk. Much less common, it is made of leather or washi paper.

In the Zen meditation ( zazen ) the Zabuton serves as a base for the Meditiationskissen ( Zafu ) sitting on the meditator.

If a unterrangiger fighter in sumo against a yokozuna wins ( highest rank in sumo ), viewers cast their Zabuton in the ring. As yokozuna traditionally deny the last fight of a tournament day, that's no problem.
