Zadok

Zadok ( 10th century BC) was a Jewish priest who is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible.

The Hebrew name or Zadok Sadoc means " justice ". The biblical Zadok was the son of Achitub, a descendant of Eleazar, the third son of Aaron, who helped David. According to the biblical narrative Zadok helped the ark of Israel after it was lost in the battle of Eben- Ezer against the Philistines to bring from the house of Obed -edom in Gath to Jerusalem. Zadok supported David against Absalom. He participated in the anointing of Solomon. King Solomon made Zadok high priest Abiathar instead.

Zadok and his followers were on duty in the first temple that Solomon had built, until its destruction in 587 BC The second temple the Zadokites knew it the service of the high priest to 171 BC They were also priests at the Jewish Temple in Leontopolis in Egypt and served in Jerusalem until its destruction by the Romans under Titus in the year 70

Georg Frideric Handel's coronation anthem Zadok the priest, which is about the anointing of Solomon by Zadok and Nathan, has been used since 1727 at every coronation of a British monarch, most recently in 1953.
