Zafferana Etnea

Zafferana Etnea is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 9252 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Zafferana Etnea is located 28 km north of Catania on the eastern slope of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in the timber trade, tourism and agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Aci Sant'Antonio, Acireale, Adrano, Belper, Bianca Villa, Bronte Castiglione di Sicilia, Giarre, Maletto, Milo, Nicolosi, Pedara, Randazzo, Sant'Alfio, Santa Venerina, Trecastagni and Viagrande.

History

The village was founded in 1387 in the vicinity of the priory of San Giovanni. In the past, lava flows have destroyed from the Ostkrater of Etna the place. 1852 and 1992, the lava flow stopped just a few yards from the place.
