Zahara de los Atunes

Zahara ( atún: span tuna) is a small coastal town on the Costa de la Luz ( Spanish Atlantic coast ) in Andalusia. It belongs to the municipality of Barbate in the province of Cádiz. The place is known as the center of the tuna fish catch.

Geography

The location of the resort on the southernmost foothills of the Iberian peninsula near Tarifa (the southernmost city in Spain ) and the British Gibraltar allows for views of the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier in Morocco on the African continent in good weather.

Nearest towns are Barbate Cadiz, and a little further away Jerez de la Frontera and Malaga.

The place is not very big today. Due to the mainly Spanish, but also German tourists, among others during the holiday season the place is, however, grew by some tourist facilities such as hotels, apartments and the like. Similar to the neighboring Atlanterra, it exists today mostly of apartments and some hotels. In the summer months a traditional craftsman and hippy market takes place.

History

Zahara was born in the 16th century next to an applied by the Dukes of Medina -Sidonia fortress. This served to protect the location of the eponymous tuna fishing that for the Dukes of Medina -Sidonia occupied a royal privilege.

Efforts to isolate the location of the municipality of Barbate and establishing an independent municipality found yet a majority.

Zahara was like Bolonia founded by the Romans. The present church and the Castillo, the fort served as a salt warehouse and then as storage for the pickled in salt tuna.
