Zakamensk

Sakamensk (Russian Закаменск ) is a city in the Republic of Buryatia (Russia) with 11,524 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Trans-Baikal, about 420 km southwest of the Republic capital of Ulan -Ude, in the valley of the Dschida, a left tributary of the Selenga, which opens Modonkul. Sakamensk, located on the northern flank of here over 1800 meters high Dschidagebirges, is only about five miles from the Mongolian border.

The city is the administrative center of the Sakamensk Rajons same name.

Sakamensk is a 245 km long road with the fixed station Dschida the railway Ulan- Ude - Nauschki - Ulan Bator ( Trans-Mongolian Railway ) and has a small airport.

History

Sakamensk was created in 1893 as a mining settlement by the name of Gorodok (Russian for town ).
