Zama (Tunisia)

Zama Zama Regia Major or (Greek Ζάμα μείζων Zama Meizon ) was an ancient city in the province of Africa proconsularis.

The Carthaginian general Hannibal fought in 202 BC during the Second Punic War here in the Battle of Zama against the Romans, in which he was defeated by the Roman general Scipio Africanus the Elder.

After Zama belonged to the realm of the Numidians and was the residence of King Juba I, therefore henceforth Zama Regia ( " the royal Zama " ) called.

In the Roman period it belonged to the province of Africa proconsularis and was later than the reign of Hadrian Colonia.

On an extinct episcopal see in this city, the Roman Catholic titular Zama Major declines.
