Zamak

Zamak alloys designated for the die-cast zinc. The now common alloys ( ZL0400, ZL0410 ZL0430 and ) were developed in the early 1930s at the same time with the zinc die casting process. Since then, the composition of these alloys has hardly changed.

Since all of these alloys contain 4 % of aluminum, they are also referred to as " % ZnAl4 family". Other components are from 1 to 3 % of copper (Cu ), and 0.035 to 0.06 % magnesium (Mg). In French and English-speaking, the alloys of ZnAl4 % family are also known under the name Zamak. The name is composed of the initials of the alloy components: zinc aluminum magnesium copper.

For special applications, such as very thin-walled casting or special surface properties, new zinc die casting alloys have been developed (eg Superloy ®) in recent years.

Application and use

More than 95 % of today's processed zinc alloys are used in the hot chamber die casting process. , In this procedure - in contrast to the cold chamber process - casting piston and the casting chamber, which form the injection mechanism, submerged in the liquid metal in the crucible. However, this is only possible for those materials or alloys which have a low melting point. Other common methods (centrifugal casting, permanent mold and sand casting, cold chamber process ) represent only a small and insignificant part dar.

Standardize

Until 1997, were considered in the EU countries the relevant national standards. In Germany, these were the DIN 1743 ( Part 1: zinc alloy, Part 2: Zinc die-cast parts). With the introduction of European standards EN 1774 (zinc alloy ) or EN 12844 (zinc die castings ) the different names of the zinc alloys and their chemical compositions were simplified.

Other international standards:

  • Zinc alloys: EN1774, ASTM B240, ISO 301, AS1881, JIS H2201
  • Zinc (pressure ) cast iron parts: EN12844, ASTM B86, AS1881, JIS H5301
