Zambia Railways

Zambia Railways, actually Zambia Railways Corporation, shortly ZR, is the national railway infrastructure company of Zambia.

History

Zambia Railways was divided in 1964 with the founding of the State of Zambia by the Rhodesian Railways (RR).

Network

The Zambia Railways Corporation has a route network of 1273 kilometers. It is essentially a single line of Mulobezi southeastward to Livingstone, where the Zambian rail network connects to the National Railways of Zimbabwe, and from there northeast to Lusaka, Kapiri Mposhi, Ndola, Kitwe to Chingola near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo runs. From Ndola from there is a trail to Lubumbashi and operated from there by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo ( SNCC ). Two short spur routes in Luanshya and Mufulira Copperbelt reach. A third route goes from Choma after Masuku. The TAZARA whose power does not count for Zambia Railways Corporation, connects to the network in Kapiri Mposhi.

The routes have cape gauge and carry an axle load of 17 t. Distance data:

Railway transport companies

Since 2003 has Railway Systems of Zambia ( RSZ ), a consortium of private investors over the concession, Zambia Railways to operate for 20 years.

Zambia Railways decreed 1984 101 diesel locomotives, 91 passenger carriages and 6570 freight wagons of various kinds

Projects

A SADC project intends to build a connection from Kafue by Zave in Zimbabwe and from Chipata (Malawi ) to TAZARA in Mpika. Thus, the Beira port in a much shorter path and the deep-water port of Nacala in Mozambique would be directly accessible for Zambia. Next planned is the construction of the line Solwezi (DRC ) Chingola.
