Zambujeira do Mar is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Odemira on the western Atlantic coast in Portugal with a total area of 41 km ² and 911 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011) and a population density of 22.2 inhabitants per km ².

Geography

Zambujeira do Mar is situated about 6 km west of São Teotónio and 13 km southwest of Odemira.

History

The municipality was created in 1989, by splitting off from the community of São Teotónio.

In the course of municipal reform, which aims Portugal, given its budgetary problems arising from the international banking crisis, the resolution of the community is planned. Against this resistance itself has formed.

Culture and sights

Since 1996, the beginning of August, in the municipality " of Southwest Festival " takes place, one of the biggest rock festivals in Portugal. 2012 were from 1 to 5 August Ben Harper, Eddie Vedder, David Guetta, The Roots, and many others, the Thievery Corporation, The Vaccines a guest.

The coast around the town is part of the national park Parque Natural do Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina and consists of steep cliffs and small sandy beaches at places where the rivers run into the sea. Outside the tourist time, this area is deserted. In addition to the beach below the town there are the beaches Alteirinhos, Nossa Senhora, Arquinha, Carvalhal and Tonel. South of Zambujeira is the Praia dos Alteirinhos is where authorized on the southern end of the beach nude.

The small fishing Church Capela da Nossa Senhora do Mar is a listed building.

Economy

Tourism plays a major role, in addition to the seasonal beach holiday and the annual festival of rural tourism in particular has increased in the last few years. But the agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries are important sources of income in this area. The municipality has four small ports or landing places better for fishing boats.
