Region

Zanzibar City ( Swahili Zanzibar ( Jiji ), English Zanzibar City ) is the capital of the island of Unguja, better known as Zanzibar. Zanzibar town is also the capital and seat of government of the two islands of Pemba and Unguja comprehensive semi-autonomous state of Zanzibar in Tanzania. It also meets one of the two districts ( wilaya ) of the region ( mkoa ) Zanzibar Urban / West, namely the District Urban ( Mjini ). The population is 205,870 (as of 1 August 2002).

International reach is Zanzibar City Zanzibar through the airport, about six kilometers south of Stone Town.

Culture

Almost all the inhabitants of the city are Muslims. According to their way of life is affected. The Zanzibari culture is strongly influenced by Arab, Indian and other Asian influences. With colonialism and Western elements were added to the culture.

Every year the Zanzibar International Film Festival ( ZIFF ) takes place in the old town. The ZIFF is a significant of African film productions and films with African theme event. Districts

The most famous district of the island's capital, is the historic center of Stone Town ( swahili: Mji Mkongwe ), which is since 2000 as a World Heritage Site under UNESCO protection. It covers about 96 acres. Most of the brick houses were built of coral rock about 150 years ago, many are being renovated and restored. Major efforts in this regard makes the Aga Khan Trust For Culture ( Historic Cities Programme ) which already renovated the Old Pharmacy ( Old Dispensary ) and the Customs House ( Old Customs House). In addition, a comprehensive plan for the preservation and creation of the historic Old Town was created in collaboration with the Stone Town Conservation and Development Authority, which provides, among other things, the redevelopment of the waterfront Forodhani Garden.

Near the old town is the port of the city, run by the ferries and dhows, among other things to Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian mainland and Pemba.

Other residential areas in Zanzibar town Michenzani heard with a row of houses from prefabricated, built in the 1970s with the help of the GDR in the style of the former GDR architecture.
