Zapala Department

The department Zapala located in the center of the province of Neuquen in southern Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered on the northeast by the Departamento ANELO, on the east by the department of Confluencia, on the southeast by the Departamento Picún Leufú, on the southwest by the Departamento Catán Lil and to the northwest by the Departamento Picunches.

The capital of the department of the same name is Zapala Zapala.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population increased from 35 806 inhabitants (2001) to 46 957 inhabitants in 2005.

Cities and Towns

The department is divided into Zapala Zapala ( a municipality of first category ), Mariano Moreno ( a municipality of the second category ) and the Comisiones de Fomento Covunco Abajo, Los Catutos, Ramón M. Castro and Villa del Puente Picún Leufú. Other small settlements ( Parajes ) ​​are Barda Negra, Bardita, La Amarga, Laguna Blanca, Laguna Miranda, Los Hornos, Mallín del Muerto, Ñireco, Paso de los Indios and Santo Domingo.
