Zaramo people

The Zaramo (also Saramo or in their own plural designation Wasaramo ) are an ethnic group between Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo in Tanzania Pwani in the region, which belong to an estimated 656 730 people in 2000.

Their traditional language is the same Bantu language Zaramo, which has however lost against the Swahili important. The predominant religion is Islam, and there are also Christians and followers of traditional religion with a deity mulungu.

The field of Zaramo, mostly located in the present-day districts Kisarawe and Bagamoyo the Pwani Region, is also called Usaramo. Today, many Zaramo also live in nearby Dar es Salaam.

The Zaramo were affected by the East African slave trade; Descendants in the 19th century enslaved Zaramo live today as Somali Bantu in southern Somalia.
