Zarzis

Zarzis (Arabic جرجيس, Ǧarǧīs DMG ) is a coastal city with a duty-free port in South-East Tunisia, on the Mediterranean. The population is about 70 895 inhabitants ( as of 2004), of which 24,900 lived in the medina. Second largest district at that time was Mouansa with 16 672 inhabitants, followed by the four other neighborhoods.

In addition to olive and Dattelpalmenkulturen is the export of fish and salt of importance since 1973, tourism.

History

Its history goes back at least to Gergis in Phoenician times. The city was ruled by Carthage from 146 BC by Rome. Set on a Fast island city lived on fishing and olive cultivation, which played an important role in supplying Rome with cooking oil and Leuchtmmitteln. Its proximity to the commercial center of Djerba and the port to the Mediterranean gave the town a role of mediator between the Mediterranean trading centers and those in the Sahara. In addition, the city has operated as a salt exporter from the sebkha El melah.

With the Arab conquest in 647 Islamization began after the region had been Christianized by 300. Nevertheless, there were not only trade contacts with the Muslim hinterland, but also to the cities of Europe.

A separate French- Genoese salt trading company consisted 1714-1724.

During the Six - Day War took place in Tunisia in attacks on synagogues in Tunis was one of them set on fire. Later, other synagogues were attacked in 1983 also in Zarzis.

Tourists came from 1973 from abroad in the region Djerba Zarzis, after a decree had set up a tourism zone in the region. As the influx of visitors attended with their high water consumption from the 1990s for water shortage in the region, were considerations to make use of underground, previously untouched waters, but it was decided in view of the costs and the unpredictable ecological consequences for sea water desalination. After Sfax and Mahdia Zarzis is the biggest fish export port in the south. The tourism zone begins about three kilometers north of Zarzis.

Sports

The football club ES Zarzis plays in Ligue 1, the top domestic league.

Market

Monday and Friday is held each a market in Zarzis. On Wednesday he will be held in the El Mouensa, on Saturday in the suburb Souihel.
